1) Tell us how you first met? Who what when where why? Give us the dirty details.
We initially met when we were both 4-years-old when we were in the same pre-school class (Chestnut Hill Preschool). While we don’t remember too much about each other, we have pictures together and Kelly’s mom has it written in a memory book that Steve was one of her best friends. We later reconnected while attending Manchester High School. We were in the same circle of friends all throughout high school and stayed in touch when we went to different colleges and while home for school breaks. When Steve decided to study abroad in London during his spring semester of his junior year, we became sort of “pen pals” and started dating after he returned to the States.
2) When did you know he/she was the one? Was there something he/she did?, etc.
Kelly: There was no specific time, but with Steve it’s always the little things he does that really stand out to me and made me feel special from the start. In high school he would always bring me a strawberry coolatta from Dunkin on my birthday when we were just friends, which was the best for a girl that will never like the smell or taste of coffee. Like that, after we started dating it was the little but extremely well thought out things, gifts, notes or dates that began to add up quickly for me to know that he was the one.
Steve: Nothing specific but probably after we’d been dating for a year or so. We clicked on an emotional level and shared the same love of friends and family. Her sense of humor and love for travel and simple things in life drew me in and like I said- within maybe of year of dating- I pictured us getting married.
3) Tell us about the proposal. (Did you see it coming, how long was it in the planning?, how did you feel? nervous, excited, freaking out?)
Kelly: I definitely didn’t see the proposal coming on the day it happened. We spent Thanksgiving together with both of our families and the next day I thought Steve had to work in the city. I went back up to Manchester, the town we both grew up in and Steve told me he was taking a train into NYC to go to work. He even sent pictures of him at work to make it seem like it was a normal day in the office.
I didn’t know what was happening until I was driving in town with my sister past the preschool where we first met and saw him standing in the parking lot.
Steve: I was pretty sure she’d say yes (J) but I was still nervous with all the planning and making sure everything went well. I only told maybe 6 people total including her parents- and her sister was a big help! I proposed to Kelly after dating for 5.5 years at the place “we first met,” Chestnut Hill Preschool. We later got to celebrate that night with our families and close friends.
4) Tell us the one thing you love most about each other.
Kelly: His wit and kind demeanor.
Steve: Her kindness and care for others.
5) If you feel comfortable, share with us something silly or quirky the other person does.
Kelly: I have never met anyone who loves soup as much as Steve does. He could have it for breakfast, lunch and dinner if high levels of sodium weren’t such a health concern! He even convinced my grandma at the time that his middle name was soup, “Steve Soup Stephanou.”
Steve: People don’t think Kelly is quirky but oh she is. Sometimes when we’re driving in the car silently she’ll spontaneously break out singing. Her favorite is to scream out “sha la la la bamba!”, which I don’t even think are the correct lyrics to “La Bamba” but she sounds great regardless.
6) Besides getting married – what’s the one thing you are looking forward to on your wedding day?
Having all of our loved ones from near and far in the same place at the same time.
7) What’s your favorite trend for weddings right now?
Kelly: Soft colors, gold accents and garden-inspired floral pieces.
Steve: Less couples deciding to play “We are Family” during the reception (I hope).
8) What inspired your décor or theme?
At Saint Clements, we loved the garden and wisteria vines that bloom in the summer on the grounds. We were inspired by the garden-inspired soft colors that were already at the Castle.
9) What’s one thing you wish you would have known earlier in regards to planning?
Kelly: Luckily working in the event management industry, planning events comes easy to me. But planning a wedding, I have a learned is a different beast all in itself! We had a 19 month engagement which gave us more than enough time to plan everything out and also had a tremendous about of support and help from our families.
