1) Tell us how you first met? Who what when where why? Give us the dirty details.
Matt: We met online. I knew her back then as Happyness1223. Messages turned to phone calls, which turned into a date at UConn. We saw “The Crazies.” Hands were sweating. Drove her back to the dorm at about 15mph. “Why are you driving so slow?” she asks. Didn’t want the night to end. Said goodbye holding her under the stars. Second date at WNEC. Comedy of errors. Crazy lady accuses me of hitting her car. Forgot my wallet at the dorm. I asked her to be my girlfriend.
Amanda : We met online, on OKCupid in 2010. We talked on there for a while, and then had 3 hour-long phone calls that we never wanted to stop. We finally decided to meet on March 16, 2010. He came to UConn, picked me up and then we went to Willy Pizza, we saw The Crazies (terrible movie) at the Eastbrook Mall, and then he took me to McDonald’s across the street because he didn’t want the night to end. That’s when I had my first fish filet (romantic, right?) But it was so sweet because he was driving so slow and didn’t want to drop me off and say goodbye… A week later we met again at his college, WNEC. He brought me out to dinner and then left his wallet in his dorm. He had to leave me at the restaurant while he went back to get it! (Should have known…) But he asked me to be his girlfriend and I said yes.
2) When did you know he/she was the one? Was there something he/she did?, etc.
Amanda: I honestly knew he was the one before I even met him! It was one of those crazy long phone calls we had… and after I got off the phone with him, I said to myself, “I’m going to marry him…” Somehow I just knew. He has never proven me wrong. He is my best friend. There is no one else I would rather be spending my life with. I’m so happy I get to come home to him every day! He treats me like a queen and goes above and beyond for me.
Matt: Right from the beginning I knew.
3) Tell us about the proposal. (Did you see it coming, how long was it in the planning?, how did you feel? nervous, excited, freaking out?)
Amanda: I knew this trip was special, because he was keeping everything a surprise. But… we had gone on surprise trips before. As we are driving, we go past the exit for the Cape… then we go past the exit for Boston. So I REALLY don’t know where we are going. Then we get to Newburyport and he takes me ROCK CLIMBING! Which we had never done before and I was so thrown off. The whole day he was a little off. He needed his phone to be charged (usually he doesn’t care), and he kept asking everyone around what the best place to eat was. I asked him, “Where are we going to eat?” and he said, “You’ll see.” I asked him what I needed to wear, and he said, “Listen. No one is going to be looking at you.” I was so confused! We walked to the door and it was a lighthouse. Then I saw in the window that there was an ad that said that you could have a private meal at the top. That’s when I knew. I had tears in my eyes as we traveled up the stairs, all the way to the top. It was surreal. We had a waitress who went up and down all of those stairs and got us our meal and drinks. It was a beautiful view of the harbor at the top. He dragged it out as long as he possibly could before he proposed. He was so good at being suspenseful! Then after he put the ring on my finger he used his phone… the reason why he needed it charged was because he had hired a photographer to capture the proposal! He thought of everything. I couldn’t have asked for a better night… or a better proposal! How many people can say they were proposed to at the top of a lighthouse?
Matt: I bought the engagement ring the November before I proposed, and I would take it out and look at it every night once Amanda went to bed (it’s amazing she never saw it!!). I did a ton of research leading up to the proposal day and had a few other options in case the lighthouse in Newburyport fell through. I called and nagged the lady there for a date, because they usually book years in advance. Luckily there was someone who was supposed to go who never paid the last time they went… So they snuck us in instead. It was amazing how everything fell into place!
4) Tell us the one thing you love most about each other.
Amanda: I love his sense of humor. He gets me to laugh when I’m taking something too seriously.
Matt: She is genuine, spontaneous, funny and smart!
5) If you feel comfortable, share with us something silly or quirky the other person does.
Amanda: Matt will try so hard to whistle (he’s pretty bad) and make me guess what song he is whistling… it’s about a 50/50 shot of me getting it! haha
Matt: She burps a lot!
6) Besides getting married – what’s the one thing you are looking forward to on your wedding day?
Amanda: I’m so excited to see how everything comes together. Right now I’m so focused on all the little pieces and I can’t wait to see how it all flows! I am dying to see the reception hall and how it looks with my dad’s lighthouses!
7) What’s your favorite trend for weddings right now?
Since we both love Cape Cod, we went with a nautical theme. I love the classic colors (navy blue, grey). I don’t think they ever go out of style.
8) What inspired your décor or theme?
Our theme morphed over the time we were planning. We always knew it would be a Cape Cod theme (we both grew up spending summers there), but then it took a nautical twist and then a lighthouse twist. My father hand-crafted every single lighthouse centerpiece. They are exact replicas of Cape Cod/Newburyport lighthouses, including the one we got engaged in. There is a ton of love, heart and soul put into the décor for the wedding! It’s beyond my wildest dreams.
9) What’s one thing you wish you would have known earlier in regards to planning?
I think we did a pretty good job of planning, but it is true when people tell you the last few weeks are the most stressful. I’ve spent most of my time doing wedding things (luckily I’m a teacher and I have the time off!).
